TU Delft

Posted by jeff smith on April 15, 2013

Met today (4/15/2013) with some of the simulation faculty at TU Delft (http://www.tudelft.nl/en/). The faculty members included:

  • Alexander Verbraeck;
  • Joseph Barjis; and
  • Mamadou Seck.

In addition, one of the PhD students in the group,¬†Cagri Tekinay, discussed his research and showed me around campus a bit. ¬†Unfortunately, I didn’t take many pictures of the campus — only these three. ¬†I took the first one while walking over the bridge (notice the interested colored window frames around the tops of the buildings – it seems that all of the buildings in the Faculty of Architecture had these) ¬†The next two are inside the Department of Systems Engineering building. ¬†One shows the nice little work areas that students use for collaboration (the look sort of like fast food restaurant booths, but have the large monitors that the students can use with their notebook computers) and the other shows a typical small classroom (kind of fishbowl-like :-)).

Delft Trip

Posted by jeff smith on April 14, 2013

Here with Kristi and her sister, Beth for and extended trip to Germany, The Netherlands, and Prague. For me, it’s work in every city. For K and B, it’s just travel :-).

Had to parallel park along the canal when we first arrived in Delft. A bit nerve-wracking. I wonder how many cars go off the edge …

We’re staying in an apartment in the old town area. It seems quite nice here, but parking is quite difficult. I recommend leaving the car elsewhere and depending on public transportation. The “streets” are quite narrow and bicycles are everywhere.

The apartment is quite nice. Space is at a premium here, so they don’t waste much — especially on stairs between floors. These are the stairs from the main floor to the upper floor. We carried our bags up and down these. Just a bit tight!

Anybody up for Thai? Mexican? No problem, I have a place for you. Look … BBQ in Delft, and gourmet BBQ, at that. We didn’t try it yet, but still have two days here.

Hannover Fair – April 2013

Posted by jeff smith on April 14, 2013

Visited the Hannover Fair for two day (April 10 and 11). This picture is from the Simio booth.

The fair is huge. Many, many different buildings and topics. For me, the most interesting buildings belonged to the “Automation” set.

We received many questions about whether Simio would run on Apple computers. This was Markus’ response … at least it got quite a few laughs!

Had a bit of a problem with our hotel safe (with passports, money, and Surface inside), but the hotel handyman showed up with his drill and solved the problem.

DTW neon tunnel

Posted by jeff smith on February 17, 2013

On the way to Ottawa for the week. ¬†A quick stop in Detroit …

image

Gotta love it. ¬†I should have used video rather than a still picture. ¬†The neon lights pulsate (is that the right word?) different “calm and pleasing” colors/tones. ¬†Makes me feel so mellow, even though I’m at an airport :-).

Salt Lake City – Jan 25-28, 2013

Posted by jeff smith on January 27, 2013

Here on a short trip with Kristi (she’s teaching the USTA officiating courses and I’m just hanging out). ¬†There has been an inversion here for the last two days of our trip. ¬†Seems kind of weird, but you’re not supposed to go outside and do too much — the smog just hangs down. ¬†Clearing a bit today and should be totally gone by tomorrow — of course we fly out tomorrow morning :-).

Salzburg, Austria

Posted by jeff smith on December 15, 2012

Woke up (fairly) early and headed to Salzburg on the train.

Yes, we did do the “Sound of Music Bus Tour”. ¬†It was Tracey’s dream since childhood.

Here’s the beer that they served on the tour. ¬†Fairly good beer. ¬†All of the other good pictures of the tour are on Tracey’s camera.

Of course we need the traditional photos from the train. ¬†Unfortunately, the pictures don’t do justice to the actual views.

Second day at nuremburg

Posted by jeff smith on December 13, 2012

image
Visited the Nuremberg court complex where the war trials were held (in Court Room 600).  Very interesting.

image
Flags of the four countries that managed the process.  Interesting that the US flag has text in German.

image
Yes, we ate at a Mexican restaurant in Germany.

image
View from the castle wall in downtown Nuremberg.

Stopped for a beer or two on the way down the hill from the castle.

Visit to the Brandenburg Gate

Posted by jeff smith on December 9, 2012

image

Yes, that is snow.¬† It was 24 degrees.¬† Cold. ¬†We took a cab there from the hotel and wandered around a bit. ¬†A very nice area, but we had a very difficult time finding a restaurant/bar that wasn’t full!

Now if we could just find Kristi’s and Drew’s luggage…
