A beautiful day to visit Nice – a bit hot, but pretty nice, nevertheless.

Roman Aqueducts at Pont du Gard

Posted by jeff smith on June 30, 2012

We took a quick detour to visit the aqueducts at Pont du Gard (Alice remembered from her civil engineering days).  Randy and I are sitting at the outdoor cafe enjoying a beer while Alice, Kristi, Stephanie, and Mike go inspect the aqueduct.

Interestingly, we got stuck in the parking lot on the way out of the park.  Apparently, the credit card reader only accepted credit cards with the electronic chip embedded (none of us had one).  Anyway, after about 10 minutes, someone finally walked up and took our money and used his credit card (we couldn’t back up because there was a long line of cars waiting for us).

Dinner at Cassis

Posted by jeff smith on June 30, 2012

You can see the village of Cassis from atop the overlooking cliffs.  The cliffs are high.  By the way, just out of view of this picture (closer to the cliffs) was a huge private yacht — complete with jet skis and a smaller “going to shore”-type boat.  You had to get closer to the cliff edge to see it and there was no way I was going to try to take a picture — I wanted my full attention on balancing :-).

The is a view of our group at the cliff edge (well, it’s the edge as far as I’m concerned)

Finally, the view below is from our restaurant — back up to the cliffs where the previous pictures were taken.  This picture doesn’t do justice to the sheerness of the cliffs.  You can sort of see it in the picture above, but you have to see it in person to get the full effect.

The Coast of Marseille

Posted by jeff smith on June 28, 2012

Had a great dinner on a boat in the harbor.  Took a quick tour before dinner.  Unfortunately, couldn’t find the Jimmy Buffett song to play at dinner …

At Alice and Randy’s pool house

Posted by jeff smith on June 23, 2012

It’s good to know people when you travel :-).  Kristi and I arrived without major disruptions.  Trip involved driving to Atlanta, flying to JFK (with a 75 minute circling because of weather in NYC and a fire at the air traffic control tower in Washington), flying to Nice, a bus to the train station, and a train to Aix-en-Provence.  Alice and Randy were waiting at the train station when we arrived — easy as cake.

First Beer in France

Posted by jeff smith on June 23, 2012

On the TGV from Nice to Aix.  Had quite a few of these last time we were here (and in Monaco).  Very tasty.  First time on the TGV — it was very easy and convenient.

Last Efes in Istanbul

Posted by jeff smith on June 4, 2012

Luckily we had some time in the lounge before boarding for home.  They only had Efes Light, but it was 10:00 in the morning, so a Light was reasonable.

Celebrating the start of the dinner cruise …

Or having an ice-cold Efes — you decide :-).  Thanks to Jane Ammons who took this picture with her trusty iPad.
